Probably the most anticipated release of this year, people are craving for a dose of a possible solution to a pandemic plaguing the world. They say you can become invincible to the deadly virus, and safely venture out if you inject it. But what exactly is it?

The body has many ways of defending itself against pathogens which is a name for disease-causing organisms. Skin, mucus, and cilia all work as physical barriers to prevent pathogens from entering the body. But when that method fails to stop a pathogen entering the body, the immune system is triggered. Our immune system is the defense system for our body, and when it detects a pathogen, our brave white blood cells come forth to try to attack and destroy them. Each antibody, or soldier, in our body, is trained to recognize one specific pathogen. We have thousands of different antibodies in our bodies. When the human body is exposed to a pathogen for the first time, it takes time for the immune system to respond and produce antibodies specific to that pathogen. During that period of ‘processing; time, there is a high chance of the person getting ill.

The COVID-19 virus is one of a kind, with a unique structure that has never been seen by our body, so there will be some time taken for our immune system to recognize it and create a new antibody. But it will be too late before a new antibody is created, and we would become sick. But that’s where vaccines come in. They are, in essence, a weakened, non-dangerous section of the pathogen. When they are injected into the body, it will trigger the immune system, and then the body will set out to create the antibody, all without any pathogen making us sick. Then, when an antibody is created and the real pathogen enters the body, our soldiers can easily attack and destroy them, as they were prepared for it.

So, that’s how vaccines protect us from various diseases and keep us safe. Though we feel like COVID-19 is dominating the world right now, the great scientists and doctors all around the world are on the verge of bringing out a vaccine to defeat it and change the course of the year by protecting us. Until that-masks on, everyone!
